Dude, whose car is that? #DigitalIndia
Have you ever faced a situation where you have encountered a vehicle parked in your parking spot and you want to know who it belongs to? Or maybe a car with it's headlights left on and you would like to inform the careless owner of the same. Or maybe you witnessed an accident and want to check out the owner's details?
This initiative by the Ministry of Transport may just be the thing for you. On of the well implemented online intitiatives, it goes by the name Parivahan Sewa. And can be accessed here https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/
It has 2 sections
Vahan : For vehicle registration related services
Sarathi : For driving license related services
This portal allows for a wide variety of vehicle and drivilng license related tasks including paying fees, applying for duplicate RC, applying for license etc. I'll restrict myself in this post to finding details of a vehicle using the registration number, since that is the only thing I have actually tried out
To know who a vehicle is registered to, you hover over "Online Services" and then click on "Know your Vehicle Details"
(or you can directly go to the link here : https://parivahan.gov.in/rcdlstatus/)
It takes you to a page where you enter the registration number of the vehicle and mobile number on which you would receive the OTP.
Once the OTP has been correctly entered it displays the details of the vehicle. For this example, I picked a random car belonging to a random guy, I happened to see online ;)
The website is cool, but entering an OTP every time becomes a little tiring. Which is why the new app they have introduced is even cooler. Their app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store at the link below.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nic.mparivahan
This app doesn't require an OTP authentication (atleast as of now) and even supports an offline mode.
In online mode, searching is as simple as entering the vehicle's registration number and pressing submit.
In offline mode, it will send an SMS and you'll receive a SMS with the vehicle details.
The app then proceeds to read the SMS and displays the vehicle details directly in the app.
Again, I'll check for that random car that belongs to some random guy! ;)
Alternatively, you can just send an SMS to +91 77382 99899 with the text reading "vahan<space>Registration number" (for eg. vahan KA01AB1111)
This is the same number to which you can send a SMS to check your PF details. More on that in another post.
You'll receive the vehicle details in a SMS that looks like this.
The app also allows you to register and have a digital version of your RC and DL handy, alongwith a printable QR codes. However, the registration process doesn't seem to be working as of now, with an error regarding service being unavailable being shown everytime I tried.
UPDATE : The registration process is now back up, with a small change. Now it is based on a mobile OTP verification, and not Aadhaar as it was earlier.
Once you register, you have have even more features waiting for you. For example, you can add your vehicle registration details to your account. Any time your vehicle is challaned or towed away, you'll get notifications for the same. There is also a functionality to report traffic violations.
Pretty neat, I say!!
The registration can be accessed by clicking the profile icon on the right top.
Adding your vehicle RC can be done from the My RC page.
Once you have entered your RC details, there is a verification of the engine number and chassis number, which you can find on your vehicle's registration card.
Once verified, the RC details can be accessed form the Dashboard tab. A QR code can be created for your reference, but as of now I am not sure how it can be used.
Notifications of challans and tow-aways of your vehicles can be accessed on the notifications tab, which can be accessed form an icon on the home page.
Reporting an offence can be done by pressing a button at the bottom of the home page. You can track the status of a reported offence as well.

Is there any method to stop others downloading RC if they have engine number and chassis number?
